The Guermantes Way is the third, and perhaps most arduous volume of Marcel Proust's masterpiece, In Search Of Lost Time. It was first published in 1920/21 and charts the Narrator's entry into Parisian high society.
His obsession with the Guermantes family slowly reveals a superficial, cruel, and intellectually hollow world beneath all the posturing and polished wit. This social satire is sharpened by the Dreyfus Affair, which exposes widespread anti-Semitism, political hypocrisy, and the transactional nature of social prestige.
Running parallel to this is a tragedy of mortality, anchored by the illness and death of the Narrator's grandmother, which lays bare the power of grief.
The volume thus works through counterpoint, the real and visceral feelings of loss and mourning contrasted with the ephemeral and meaningless conventions of polite society – both things that will come to inform the Narrator's own artistic efforts when he finally comes to them.
